 Jewelry Repair and Metalwork : Course Outline

Summary:

This course is designed for the novice jeweler or any individual looking to enter the jewelry field for fun or profit. The course will cover common jewelry making and repair techniques. Each technique will be demonstrated and ample time given to the students to practice what they learn.

The course provides the student with a strong understanding of the basics of working with metal. Students will not only understand "what" to do but also " why " they are doing it. This is an essential building block in growing your skills as a jeweler. The course is designed to be fun as well as informative . Each student will be given personal attention and allowed to progress at a speed that is comfortable for them.

The goal of the class is to enable students to comprehend and perform basic level jewelry techniques. A certificate is awarded to those students who successfully complete the projects and show a good understanding of the techniques studied.

 

 

Lesson 1: Introduction: Metals, Milling and Common Tools.

Topics covered include properties of metals , metal testing, tool names and uses, jewelry cleaning methods, introduction to the torch system and shop safety.

Discussion of the torch will include safe operation, flame type and purpose, and chemicals used when working with the torch. Students will learn how to pour an ingot and use the mill to draw plate and wire. Hardening and annealing of metals will also be covered.

 

Lesson 2 : Fabricating: Soldering , Piercing, and Sawing

Basic Pic, Sweat and Pallion soldering techniques will be demonstrated. Proper filing and sawing methods will also be discussed. Students will make a ring using the techniques illustrated.

 

Lesson 3 : Ring Sizing and Shanking.

Students will learn how to size a ring larger and smaller . Several different techniques will be illustrated. There will also be a discussion on sensitive gemstones.

 

Lesson 4 : Chain and Clasp Repair

Basic chain and prong repair will be covered along with proper polishing and finishing techniques. Advanced clasp work will also be demonstrated. Students will be given time in class to catch up on any other projects at this time.

 

Lesson 5 : Prong repair and Setting

Students will learn the basics of prong repair including prong replacement and retipping. Students will also practice setting , removing and resetting faceted stones in four and six prong mountings.

 

Lesson 6 : Bezel Fabrication

Students will learn how to set and fabricate bezel settings. The class will end with a discussion on finding work in the jewelry business as well as how to set up a shop at home.

 

Extra Projects :

Piercing and sawing, hollow forming, and clasp construction.
